The Big Affair – Sunday 10th August 2025

Once again we were very lucky with the weather on the day of The Big Affair and the sun shone for us.

As always, we would like to thank Kerry and everyone at Upwey House for their magnificent support; without them we wouldn’t be able to put on this event. And also we would like to thank those local organisations who kindly donated some of the raffle prizes.

We had some very popular additions to the line-up this year. The children, and some adults, were very engaged with the Punch and Judy Shows and their shouts of delight could be heard around the field. Donkeys, from West Hills Donkeys, quietly took excited children on rides. The afternoon’s entertainment was started off with Poole Me Hearties singing some sea shanties and quickly followed by Seaxa Anglo Saxons demonstrating a few fighting techniques.

Once again delicious food was provided from A-Yum Yum Thai, Bigger Bites Dorset and Lizzie Baking Bird, with a Mad Mitch Ice Cream van offering dessert. Drinks were provided by Cerne Abbas Brewery and Little Waddon Vineyard, who were much appreciated, and thank you to them both for providing raffle prizes.

Some new children’s games kept the youngsters happy, and a big thank you to Margaret and Susana for organising them. John’s fairground games also kept them entertained and, if that wasn’t enough, there was also the bouncy castle. For those who wanted something a little different, axe throwing proved to be very popular, but with varying amounts of success!

Again we welcomed back the Alpacas, who are always so popular, and a number of our local talented artists and crafters came along to tempt everyone with a variety of lovely items.

As the afternoon progressed we were treated to a couple of performances from local legends Robbie McIntosh and Steve Wilson. Again they went down a storm and a very big thank you to them.

Finally, the Upwey Society would like to send out a huge thanks to all those people who volunteered to help organise and support us on the day, without your help it would be impossible to run an event like this. And to those of you who came along, we hope you enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of food, drink and entertainment.

Open Gardens – 28/29 June 2025

This year’s Open Gardens was held on the weekend of 28th and 29th June.

We had a record number of gardens opened this year. Some big, some small, front gardens, back gardens, working gardens and a lego garden! Something for everyone.

There was also an historical display, by Sue Virgin, in the Old School Village Hall, including the Flood of 1955, and St Laurence Church opened its doors for an art exhibition.

The Scarecrow competition also took place.  Unfortunately fewer entries this year, but those who took part were brilliant.

Upwey Open Gardens 2024

The Open Gardens weekend got off to a great start with glorious weather and lots of keen gardeners, brochures in hand, making their way round the village to the 27 gardens open this year.  The gardens on show offered a huge variety from small gardens and courtyards to large formal gardens, cottage planting to vegetable gardens and everything inbetween.

Homemade cakes and refreshments were on offer in the lovely garden of Mill House in Church Street and a big thanks to Richard and Susan Willett for allowing us to set up our tea room.

Once again, a minibus continually made its way round the village providing a hop-on hop-off service.

Thank you to all those keen gardeners who showed up to support the Open Gardens and a proportion of the profits made will be going to a local charity, STARS, which supports victims of sexual violence.  The rest will be used to support local events organised by the Upwey Society.

Thank you to all those gardeners who kindly opened up their gardens this year.

As an added bones a selection of vintage cars were on show again this year.

The Upwey Scarecrow competition also took place on the weekend, and if you happened to be walking round the village you might have come across a couple who had definitely been up celebrating a bit too much the night before, worzel mummidge, the Good Neighbours of Upwey GNU, or Mr Toad from Toad Hall.

Many congratulations to the winners:

1st Prize – Island Garden Nursery

2nd Prize – Littlemoor Youth Club (at St Laurence Church)

3rd Prize – 68 Elwell Street

A big thank you to all those who took part this year.

The Upwey Big Affair 11 August 2024

The Upwey Big Affair took place on 11 August and was bigger and better than last year. As well as the old favourites we had some new food and drink providers including: Lizzie The Baking Bird, Little Wadden Vineyard and Cerne Abbas Brewery. We also had some new entertainment to delight the young and not so young, including: Festus Derriman Morris Dancers; an Anglo Saxon encampment and fighting demonstration; the wandering magician and topping the music was local legends Robbie McIntyre and Steve Wilson.

Upwey Bonfire and Fireworks – Sunday 5th November 2023

The Upwey Bonfire and Fireworks finally took place on Sunday 5th November at the new venue of West Farm.  Thank you to everyone who managed to navigate the soggy weather, change of venue and last minute change of day to come and enjoy the spectacular bonfire and even more spectacular fireworks.

Thank you so much to the Foot family for the use of their field, for the building of the bonfire and the placement of haybales for the youngsters to play on.

Upwey Summer Picnic: 1 August, 2pm, Upwey House paddocks, Church St

On Sunday 1 August there will be a summer picnic with music, entertainments and competitions in the grounds of Upwey House, Church Street. It’s a great opportunity for the village to get together safely after such a tough time – and entry is free.

Among the entertainments there’ll be a bouncy castle, fairground style amusements, tug of war, grand raffle, children’s fancy dress (judging at 2:30).

Bring food and drink (there’ll also be burgers to buy) and seating.

Live music from 4pm, so be ready to shake a leg.

Parking available on site.

See you there.
