Upwey Open Gardens 2024

The Open Gardens weekend got off to a great start with glorious weather and lots of keen gardeners, brochures in hand, making their way round the village to the 27 gardens open this year.  The gardens on show offered a huge variety from small gardens and courtyards to large formal gardens, cottage planting to vegetable gardens and everything inbetween.

Homemade cakes and refreshments were on offer in the lovely garden of Mill House in Church Street and a big thanks to Richard and Susan Willett for allowing us to set up our tea room.

Once again, a minibus continually made its way round the village providing a hop-on hop-off service.

Thank you to all those keen gardeners who showed up to support the Open Gardens and a proportion of the profits made will be going to a local charity, STARS, which supports victims of sexual violence.  The rest will be used to support local events organised by the Upwey Society.

Thank you to all those gardeners who kindly opened up their gardens this year.

As an added bones a selection of vintage cars were on show again this year.

The Upwey Scarecrow competition also took place on the weekend, and if you happened to be walking round the village you might have come across a couple who had definitely been up celebrating a bit too much the night before, worzel mummidge, the Good Neighbours of Upwey GNU, or Mr Toad from Toad Hall.

Many congratulations to the winners:

1st Prize – Island Garden Nursery

2nd Prize – Littlemoor Youth Club (at St Laurence Church)

3rd Prize – 68 Elwell Street

A big thank you to all those who took part this year.

The Upwey Big Affair 11 August 2024

The Upwey Big Affair took place on 11 August and was bigger and better than last year. As well as the old favourites we had some new food and drink providers including: Lizzie The Baking Bird, Little Wadden Vineyard and Cerne Abbas Brewery. We also had some new entertainment to delight the young and not so young, including: Festus Derriman Morris Dancers; an Anglo Saxon encampment and fighting demonstration; the wandering magician and topping the music was local legends Robbie McIntyre and Steve Wilson.

Upwey Bonfire and Fireworks – Sunday 5th November 2023

The Upwey Bonfire and Fireworks finally took place on Sunday 5th November at the new venue of West Farm.  Thank you to everyone who managed to navigate the soggy weather, change of venue and last minute change of day to come and enjoy the spectacular bonfire and even more spectacular fireworks.

Thank you so much to the Foot family for the use of their field, for the building of the bonfire and the placement of haybales for the youngsters to play on.

Upwey Summer Picnic: 1 August, 2pm, Upwey House paddocks, Church St

On Sunday 1 August there will be a summer picnic with music, entertainments and competitions in the grounds of Upwey House, Church Street. It’s a great opportunity for the village to get together safely after such a tough time – and entry is free.

Among the entertainments there’ll be a bouncy castle, fairground style amusements, tug of war, grand raffle, children’s fancy dress (judging at 2:30).

Bring food and drink (there’ll also be burgers to buy) and seating.

Live music from 4pm, so be ready to shake a leg.

Parking available on site.

See you there.

Upwey Society Annual General Meeting – 12 March 2020 – POSTPONED

The AGM was postponed. Understandably many people expressed concern about attending a gathering in present circumstances. Some will themselves be in at risk groups, others will have close relatives who are.

Please return to the website in the next few days, when we may be able to provide documents that would have been circulated, and give further news.

The AGM of the Upwey Society was to be held on Thursday, 12 March at 7:30 in the Old School Village Hall. The following documents can be downloaded:

Formal calling notice

Minutes of the 2019 AGM

Draft amendments to Constitution and Rules

Nomination form for election as officer or committee member

Please read the calling notice. It sets out the business of the meeting, including some particular matters on which the committee wants members’ views.

Wine Challenge – 7 March 2020

Back by popular demand – the Society’s “Call My Bluff” wine challenge will be at 7:30 pm on 7 March in the Old School Village Hall, followed by supper.
