The Society’s AGM was held on 10 March 2021, on Zoom. The 2020 AGM having been cancelled in March 2020, this year’s meeting was taken as the 2020 and 2021 meetings combined.
The AGM was postponed. Understandably many people expressed concern about attending a gathering in present circumstances. Some will themselves be in at risk groups, others will have close relatives who are.
Please return to the website in the next few days, when we may be able to provide documents that would have been circulated, and give further news.
The AGM of the Upwey Society was to be held on Thursday, 12 March at 7:30 in the Old School Village Hall. The following documents can be downloaded:
Please read the calling notice. It sets out the business of the meeting, including some particular matters on which the committee wants members’ views.
Back by popular demand – the Society’s “Call My Bluff” wine challenge will be at 7:30 pm on 7 March in the Old School Village Hall, followed by supper.
Six wines to try. Taste each one, and be given three descriptions, two of which will be made up by your “expert” panel. The team that identifies the most wines wins.
Tables of six – make up your own team or join one on the night.
Strictly tickets in advance only. £12 per person from Anne Prendergast – 01305 812698.
“Powerhouse soul and blues singer” Amy Mayes will be performing at the Old School Village Hall on Saturday 29 February.
2019’s curry and Christmas quiz was on Friday 6 December in the Old School Village Hall.
Due to a diary error (not ours!) the curry suppliers didn’t arrive. Emissaries were dispatched and, astonishingly, the local takeaway (Nice ‘n Spicey in Broadwey) produced 67 curries, including vegetarion options!
The quiz was great fun, and the winning team didn’t gloat at all.
St Laurence Christmas Fair will be on Saturday 30 November from 11am in the Old School Village Hall. There will be cakes, produce, quality bric-a-brac, jewellery and books on sale. A raffle will also be held, and refreshments will be available.
If anyone has any items to donate, please contract Betty Sutcliffe on 812521 or Maureen Carter on 812723.
It was with regret that we decided to cancel the bonfire and fireworks this year. The high winds and rain on the day made it too dangerous to continue. In addition the field was extremely boggy.
Although it was a great shame, the Society has not lost significant sums of money as a result (though we have, of course, lost the profit we hoped to make). We use professional dispay organisers, so we had not bought fireworks. Some of the food bought in advance was given to local good causes. Other food can be stored for later use.
Upwey Ceraramics will be holding their annual exhibition, with works by Sarah Studley, Anna Quinn, Jill Franks, Merle Turner, Catherine Woowat, Babs Kirby and Pauline Hill.
The hall will be open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 26 October and 10am to 4pm on Sunday 27.
Refreshments are available.
Local jazz musicians, the Mill Street Jazz Band, will be playing in St Laurence Church on Sunday 20 October at 6pm. There’ll be a cash bar.
Billed as “the home of foot-tapping happy jazz” the band have been playing together for over 20 years.
Tickets are £8 from Maureen Carter on 01305 812723, or the Broadway Stores, 608 Dorchester Road, 01305 812417.
This is a not-for-profit event. The ticket price covers band and church expenses.
Don’t miss Upwey’s own Party in the Park. (Well, the car park, anyway.)
On 24 August there’ll be a great party in the Church Car Park in Church St, with music, a bar, and a prize raffle.
Entry is free and everyone is welcome, members and non-members. Bring your own food. Tables and chairs will be provided but with limited supply and heavy demand it’s essential to ring to book your places:
